Ontario emergency declaration and stay-at-home order

Chairment Statement Picture

On Tuesday, January 12, 2021, the Government of Ontario declared a second state of emergency to address the COVID-19 global pandemic. Included in the declaration of emergency is a province-wide stay-at-home order requiring residents to remain home except for essential trips. The state of emergency and stay-at-home order are in place for a period of at least 28 days.

New and enhanced restrictions under the stay-at-home order include restricting hours for non-essential retail between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., limiting organized public events and social gatherings to no more than five people outdoors, prohibiting in-person shopping in most retail settings, the immediate stoppage of non-essential construction and an extension of virtual learning for York Region students.

While vaccines continue to be administered to vulnerable residents in long-term care and high-risk retirement homes, community spread of the virus continues. To date seven confirmed cases of the U.K variant of COVID-19 have been identified in York Region, with three of these cases with no link to travel. This is a critical crossroad in the fight against COVID-19 and further reinforces the need for everyone to stay home, limit trips outside for essential reasons only and continue following all public health advice.

We recognize many are experiencing COVID-fatigue and further restrictions and stay-at-home orders are difficult on individuals, families and businesses. We are grateful for all who chose to live, work and conduct business within our communities, and encourage those who are able to take advantage of the various supports and resources available to businesses.

We have been here before and by working together we slowed the spread of COVID-19 in our communities. Through a collective commitment to limit close contacts, support local businesses and follow public health advice, we will again bring our case numbers down.

We optimistically look forward to a future where we can resume our normal activities.
