Passing of former Town of Aurora Mayor Evelyn Buck

Chairment Statement Picture

On behalf of York Regional Council and the residents of York Region, it is with sadness we learn of the passing of former Town of Aurora Mayor Evelyn Buck following a brief illness.

As the Town of Aurora’s first female mayor, Ms. Buck was a passionate politician who served her constituents with dedication and veracity. First elected to Aurora Town Council in 1963, she served as the Town’s last Reeve before becoming Mayor in 1973.

During her tenure on Regional Council, Ms. Buck demonstrated her commitment to the health and well-being of the community through her work supporting the Health and Social Services Committee, York Regional Board of Health, the former York County Hospital and the South Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority.

After two successful terms as Mayor between 1973 to 1976, Ms. Buck returned to municipal politics as a Town of Aurora Councillor from 1981 to 1988 and then again from 2003 to 2014.

A fierce and courageous community advocate, she stood up for issues she felt strongly about and shared her views regardless of popularity. Following her long career in municipal public service, Ms. Buck continued to be a voice in the community with an online blog.

It was Ms. Buck’s passion for the Town of Aurora that led to the betterment of the community she called home.

The Regional Municipality of York extends our deepest condolences to former Mayor Buck’s family and loved one. Flags at the York Region Administrative Centre are lowered to half-mast in honour of our former member of Council.
