Ready. Set. Compete. Students to compete in 2018 Envirothon



York and Peel Region students to apply their knowledge in annual eco-challenge

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York will host high school students across York Region and Peel Region as they put their environmental management knowledge to the test and compete during the 2018 York Region Envirothon eco-challenge.

The annual eco-challenge encourages students to build environmental awareness and leadership through practical experience, enabling them to make informed decisions that benefit the environment and society.

When:

Thursday, April 19, 8:30 a.m.to 3:00 p.m.
(Workshops begins at 9:30 a.m.)

Workshops allow students to go beyond the classroom to gain hands-on outdoor environmental training focused on natural sciences and resource management. Students rotate through educational work stations guided by professionals while learning about forestry, soils, aquatics, wildlife and climate change. Winners are announced at the end of the competition.

The winning team of the York Region Envirothon 2018 will represent their school and the Region later this year at the Ontario Provincial Envirothon Competition on May 27 to 30 at the University of Waterloo. Winners of the Provincial Competition are invited to participate in the North American Envirothon in July at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho.

This program is offered in partnership with Forests Ontario, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, Toronto and Region Conversation Authority, York Environmental Stewardship, Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF) and Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Envirothon is a team-based education program and competition for high school students who love the outdoors. This program is an incubator for the environmental leaders of tomorrow, designed to prepare students for future green careers.
