Rid yourself of unwanted items during waste reduction week

York Region has achieved 93 per cent diversion from landfill thanks to your participation

Newmarket – There’s no better time to de-clutter than during National Waste Reduction Week. From October 15 to 21, York Region is promoting waste-reducing activities to help residents get rid of unwanted items.

In most recent reports, York Region and our local cities and towns have achieved 93 per cent diversion from landfill. The Region remains focused on pushing diversion rates to new heights. There are many ways to participate in waste reduction initiatives across York Region. Start by visiting to learn about reuse, recycling and disposal options for unwanted items.

BUNZ – York Region has partnered with to offer a community-based app helping people trade their unwanted items for something else. Bunz has created a customized collection page, #yrcurbalert, to make it easier for York Region residents to search for items in their area. By downloading the free BUNZ app members can post things they no longer want in exchange for other items. The main rule of Bunz is no money exchanged, much like the simpler times of trading and bartering. Trades can involve clothes, furniture, handmade items, sewing services and more.

Curbside Giveaway – On Saturday, October 20, York Region residents can participate in the Curbside Giveaway Day by placing unwanted items labelled FREE at the curb for others in the community to browse and take for their own use, free of charge. By using the Bunz app with #yrcurbalert you can help others find your stuff as well as help you find something too! Visit for dates in your city or town.

#yrcurbalert contest – As part of Curbside Giveaway Day, York Region is hosting a contest. Take a picture of your item and post it on York Region’s Curbside Giveaway event page on Facebook and use the hashtags #yrcurbalert and #contest to be automatically entered. Entries will be eligible for a random draw.

Remember be safe and follow these tips from York Regional Police when swapping, buying or selling items online.
