The Regional Municipality Of York

Safe Restart Agreement Funding

Chairment Statement Picture

On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York I want to acknowledge and thank the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario for their continued commitment to support all Canadians during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Today, the Government of Ontario announced they are providing the province’s 444 municipalities with up to $1.6 billion as part of the first round of emergency funding under the Safe Restart Agreement. Included in this funding is more than $40.5 million to help York Region address municipal operating pressures and support transit operations.

Since declaring a State of Emergency on March 23, 2020, York Region has worked hard to keep essential services running, while also protecting the health, safety and well-being of our residents, including our most vulnerable.

As more businesses and public spaces begin to re-open we still have more to do to ensure the safety of those who live, work and visit our communities. This includes providing reliable and safe travel options for those residents who rely on transit to travel around our Region.

With today’s announcement, York Region will continue the re-opening of the local economy, keep residents healthy and safe and maintain our critical and essential services while we continue our fight against COVID-19.

On behalf of York Region and our 1.2 million residents, I again thank our partners at all levels of government for their sustained support of municipalities. I look forward to working with our federal and provincial counterparts to ensure this funding supports the economic vitality of our communities.

Wayne Emmerson
York Region Chairman and CEO
