Statement from York Region Medical Officer of Health on third and fourth deaths in York Region

“It is with great sadness I report of two additional deaths in York Region related to COVID-19.

The Region’s third COVID-19 related death is linked to the previously declared COVID-19 outbreak at the Markhaven Home for Seniors. York Region Public Health continues to work closely with the staff and residents at Markhaven, and all long-term care centres in the Region.

The fourth death is an individual who was a close contact to the individual who passed on Thursday, March 26, 2020 and announced as York Region’s second COVID-19 death. They lived in the same household in the City of Vaughan.

I know I join all members of our York Region community in extending my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of these individuals. I also extend my sincere thanks to our tireless frontline health care workers who continue to provide excellent and compassionate care.

This case further emphasizes the seriousness of the current situation and how, as a community, we all need to do our part to protect one another.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19 and to protect the health and well-being of our community, residents need to stay home, maintain physical distancing and practice good hand hygiene. Even as the number of positive cases continues to grow, these measures will help slow the spread of COVID-19.”
