Today on December 1, The Regional Municipality of York recognizes World AIDS Day and the start of Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week in Canada from December 1 to 5.

We stand with those in York Region, throughout Canada and the world affected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). We also solemnly remember those we’ve lost.

As World AIDS Day comes amid the COVID-19 global pandemic, this year’s theme is “Global solidarity, shared responsibility.” COVID-19 has put a spotlight on human health and highlighted how health is connected to other critical issues, such as reducing inequality, human rights, gender equality, social protection and economic growth.

While important advancements in treatment have been made in recent years, many living with HIV/AIDS are still confronted with stigma and discrimination. Collectively, we need to work together to educate those who have misconceptions about HIV/AIDS to eliminate bias and judgement.

York Region Public Health has health clinics offering a wide range of testing and treatment services in a confidential, non-judgmental setting, including HIV testing. Services at the clinics are available at no cost to all York Region residents and a health card is not required. Visit york.ca for more information.

York Region residents are encouraged to learn the facts about HIV and AIDS. Collectively we can ensure those living in our local communities and throughout the worldare supported and cared for.

Wayne Emmerson
York Region Chairman and CEO
