State of Regional assets in good condition

Region owns and manages infrastructure assets with replacement value of over $12 billion

Newmarket – In a comprehensive plan that balances performance, cost and risk, York Region has released its first Corporate Asset Management Plan assessing the state of the Region’s infrastructure assets. The plan shows 93 per cent of Regional assets such as roads, bridges and facilities are in fair or better condition.

“As York Region’s population continues to grow, we must ensure assets used in delivering our most valuable services are in good condition,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “This plan represents a coordinated approach that builds on looking after these assets in a financially responsibly way.”

The plan is aligned to provincially legislated requirements and we are ahead of schedule. It consolidates asset management practices across 13 service areas including inventory, asset life and condition, and replacement value while ensuring assets are valued consistently across the organization.

As of December 2016, the estimated replacement value of Regional assets is $12.3 billion.

“The roads we drive on and the facilities used to treat our water or provide housing and emergency services all are part of what makes our communities such desirable places to live,” said City of Vaughan Regional Councillor Mario Ferri, Chair of Environmental Services. “This plan helps us understand how long assets can be used and the investments needed to ensure they remain in good condition now and for the future.”

York Region updated its Corporate Asset Management Policy earlier this year, which provides a coordinated and sustainable approach to asset management practices. Over the last five years, the Region continued to grow its asset base and put programs in place to manage these important resources through all life-cycle phases.

The Corporate Asset Management Plan will be updated again in 2022.
