Stepping up and improving road safety

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York is continuing to make road and intersection improvements to further enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety.

“We all have a role to play when it comes to road safety,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “York Region regularly looks at and implements best practices and safety measures as we continue to implement new safety features. Car drivers need to pay attention and slow down, and pedestrians and cyclists need to be aware of their surroundings.”

The following four intersections have been selected for additional safety enhancements this summer:

  • Major Mackenzie Drive and Bayview Avenue in the City of Richmond Hill
  • Yonge Street and Clark Avenue in the City of Markham
  • Bathurst Street and Carrville/Rutherford Road in the City of Richmond Hill
  • Bathurst Street and Clark Avenue in the City of Vaughan

Improvements can include no right turns on red lights, exclusive left turn signal, pedestrian and cyclist right-of-way signage and advanced pedestrian crossing signal.

“More and more, people are choosing to walk and cycle,” said Township of King Mayor Steve Pellegrini, Chair of the Region’s Transportation Services. “Active travel has many benefits and enhancing safety at our intersections is one way we can continue to create safe communities for people to travel.”

The performance of these safety measures will be measured over a period of one year to evaluate benefits and better understand the impacts on traffic flow.

York Region also recently launched a safety campaign Slow Down urging drivers to obey speed limits, pay attention and be alert for pedestrians and cyclists.
