Annual Community Report provides updates on Strategic Plan and Regional financial report

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York has released its 2016 Community Report, a combination second year update on the 2015 to 2019 Strategic Plan and a report on the Region’s 2016 financial performance.

“York Region has made great progress toward meeting the goals set out in our Strategic Plan,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “The decisions made by Regional Council reflect and support the diverse and changing needs of communities – now and for the future.”

In 2015, York Region released its 2015 to 2019 Strategic Plan – From Vision to Results, outlining four areas of focus to meet the community’s changing needs.

Maintaining quality of life in York Region over the long term requires strategic focus and this plan outlines the targets we continue to strive for to achieve the longer-term goals of Vision 2051.

The Strategic Plan provides a detailed course of action over a term of Council. Within the following four strategic result areas, 2016 accomplishments include:

  • Economic Vitality – Strengthen the Region’s economy
    • 181 kilometres of road rehabilitation was completed, including 85 kilometres of road preservation and 96 kilometres of road resurfacing
  • Healthy Communities – Support community health and well-being
    • York Region Public Health administered more than 38,000 immunizations and delivered more than 678,000 doses of vaccine
  • Sustainable Environment – manage environmentally sustainable growth
    • 591 traffic signals were reviewed and optimized to provide better traffic movement
  • Good Government – Provide responsive and efficient public service
    • Increased number of social media followers by 38 per cent

In addition to the progress report on the Strategic Plan, the Community Report also provides the financial results for the year in the Treasurer’s Report and financial statements. “York Region’s strategic priorities and fiscal management are inherently intertwined,” said Town of Richmond Hill Mayor David Barrow, Chair of Finance and Administration. “More than halfway through this Council term, we are successfully balancing the challenges faced by a growing region with sound financial sustainability.”

The Regional Municipality of York consists of nine local cities and towns, and provides a variety of programs and services to 1.2 million residents, 50,000 businesses and 595,000 employees. More information about the Region’s key service areas is available at
