Students to face off in annual eco-challenge



York Region students to apply their knowledge at 2019 York Region Envirothon

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York will host high school students across York Region as they put their environmental management knowledge to the test and compete during the 2019 York Region Envirothon eco-challenge.

Envirothon is a team-based education program and competition for high school students who love the outdoors. This program is an incubator for the environmental leaders of tomorrow, designed to prepare students for future green careers.

When:

Wednesday, April 10
8:30 a.m.to 3:00 p.m. (Workshops begins at 9:10 a.m.)

Workshops allow students to gain hands-on outdoor environmental training focused on natural sciences and resource management. Students will rotate through educational work stations guided by professionals while learning about forestry, soils, aquatics, wildlife and this year’s special topic - agroecology which is the study of ecological processes applied to agricultural production.

Winners will be announced at the end of the separate competition day being held on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 and will compete at the Provincial Ontario Envirothon Competition.

The winning team at the Provincial Competition will earn a chance to compete at the 2019 North American Envirothon Competition being held at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, from July 28 to August 2, 2019 and compete against students from eight other provinces and 45 U.S states.

This program is offered in partnership with Forests Ontario, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, Toronto and Region Conversation Authority, York Environmental Stewardship, the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust, Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF), the York Region District School Board and the York Catholic District School Board.
