Newmarket – Did you know almost half of York Region residents were born outside of Canada? People from around the world continue to #loveyr and choose the Region as their home.

York Region has a mosaic of cultures with more than 120 different languages and over 230 ethnic origins reported. Despite being a collection of individuals and places, York Region is a symphony of stories and voices. Public art and cultural locations throughout all nine of York Region’s cities and towns tell the story of our residents and play an important role in enhancing public space.

Examples of public art and cultural locations include the Pride of Canada carousel in Markham, McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Vaughan, the Sharon Temple in East Gwillimbury and more. These locations raise awareness about an issue, create a shared experience, deliver a message or contribute to cultural heritage.

In recognition of World Population Day you are encouraged to celebrate York Region's diverse population and cultural heritage. Between July 11 and August 8 post a photo of your favourite public art piece or cultural location to Instagram @yorkregiongovt using the hashtags #itsyourpicyr and #loveyr for the chance to win a Visa gift card. Regional staff will take your photos into consideration as they update the York Region Official Plan and look to build more of what you love.
