Update on contract negotiations between The Regional Municipality of York and Ontario Nurses' Association

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York is represented by three unions: The York Region units of CUPE Local 905 and CUPE Local 905 Long Term Care (LTC) and the Ontario Nurses’ Association.

The collective agreement for the Ontario Nurses’ Association, representing 234 staff, expired on March 31, 2017.

Since last September, a series of meetings between York Region and ONA representatives have been held, including two meetings with a Ministry of Labour conciliator. On January 12, 2018 ONA requested a “no board” report from the conciliator, which will result in the potential for a work disruption as early as February 5, 2018.

At York Region’s request, both sides agreed to continue negotiations with a bargaining session today.

The Regional Municipality of York’s strong preference is to arrive at a settlement that maintains fair and reasonable employment conditions. We are bargaining in good faith and will continue to do so.

Despite inflammatory public statements from ONA, York Region continues to place high value on the critical and important work performed daily by our public health nurses.

We pride ourselves on our longstanding relationships with all our employees. Agreements between The Regional Municipality of York and CUPE Local 905 and CUPE Local 905 LTC Term Care were successfully reached in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

We remain committed to supporting the health and well-being of our communities. We are hopeful an agreement can be reached with our ONA partners without any disruption in service.

The Regional Municipality of York consists of nine local cities and towns, and provides a variety of programs and services to 1.2 million residents and 51,000 businesses with 600,000 employees. More information about the Region’s key service areas is available at
