The Regional Municipality of York joins communities from across Canada in supporting Humboldt Broncos

Newmarket – The world was deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic bus crash in Saskatchewan this past weekend, claiming the lives of 16 people and injuring 13 others.

The Humboldt Broncos organization, and communities around the world, are feeling the loss and will be grappling with the impact for quite some time.

As a small measure of solidarity for the grieving families, friends and loved ones affected by this tragedy, The Regional Municipality of York flags will be lowered at half-mast. York Region is also inviting members of the public to show their support by wearing their favourite sports jersey and participating in a moment of silence for 29 seconds to reflect the 29 individuals who were on the bus.

When: Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 8:45 a.m.
Where: York Region Administrative Centre, Great Hall, 17250 Yonge Street, Town of Newmarket

Thursday’s tribute is also in recognition of the Jersey Day movement, where people are donning their favourite jerseys and posting pictures of them on social media using the hashtag #jerseysforhumboldt to show victims’ families that they are not alone.

In a similarly-symbolic move, some people are also lining up hockey sticks outside their homes and posting pictures to social media, also reflecting the collective mourning and outpouring of sympathy from across the world.

The Regional Municipality of York consists of nine local cities and towns and provides a variety of programs and services to 1.2 million residents and 51,000 businesses with 620,000 employees. More information about the Region’s key service areas is available at
