York Region achieves 100 per cent on Chief Drinking Water Inspector’s Annual Report

Perfect marks on Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change inspections and water samples

NEWMARKET – Clean, safe drinking water is vital to public health. The most recent Ontario Chief Drinking Water Inspector’s Annual Report for 2012/2013 has awarded top marks to The Regional Municipality of York for 100 per cent compliance in meeting provincial water quality standards.
“York Region continues to provide clean, safe drinking water to residents and business,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “Our proactive commitment to improving our systems and managing risk contributes to our ongoing successes and perfect scores.”
Last year, York Region performed 36,817 drinking water quality tests to confirm the 285 million litres of water delivered each day meets or exceeds Ontario’s strict drinking water standards.
“In 2014, York Region spent approximately $10.4 million upgrading, repairing or replacing our water infrastructure,” said Town of Georgina Regional Councillor Danny Wheeler, Chair of Environmental Services. “Ensuring our infrastructure is well-maintained is key to the Region consistently scoring top marks for drinking water compliance. Residents should be well assured they are receiving the finest quality water from their taps.”
Today, York Regional Council also received the 2014 Annual Drinking Water System Summary Report, documenting raw water sources, water treatment and test results for each of our drinking water systems. The report is filed with the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change for the previous year.
York Region operates and maintains three water treatment plants, 22 pumping stations, 44 elevated tanks and reservoirs, 40 production wells and more than 344 kilometres of watermains to ensure water is available when residents turn on a tap.
