York Regional Council appoints members to newly established Planning Advisory Committee

Committee to offer land use planning insight to York Regional Council

Newmarket – York Regional Council established and appointed 11 members to the York Region Planning Advisory Committee.

“It is with great pleasure I announce the appointment of members to York Region’s Planning Advisory Committee,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “The volunteer residents appointed by York Regional Council offer a wide and diverse perspectives on planning matters, making them essential to help advise us as we plan for the future.”

Membership includes York Regional Council members and nine residents:

Council Members:

  1. Wayne Emmerson, Regional Chair (ex-officio)
  2. Mayor Dave Barrow, Town of Richmond Hill
  3. Mayor Geoffrey Dawe, Town of Aurora

Resident appointments to the York Region Planning Advisory Committee:

  1. Eric Chan, City of Vaughan
  2. Thomas Dysart, Town of East Gwillimbury
  3. Sandra Fitzpatrick, City of Vaughan
  4. Steve Foglia, Town of Newmarket
  5. Carolyn Kellington, Township of King
  6. Norma McClinton, Town of Aurora
  7. Peter Miasek, City of Markham
  8. Laura Witherow, Town of Newmarket

Resident candidates to be identified as alternate members for staff to appoint in the event that a selected member does not accept the appointment or cannot fulfill their obligation.

  1. Amy Cross Mattei, City of Vaughan
  2. Hamid Mazaheri, Town of Richmond Hill
  3. Joel Sawgerman, Town of Richmond Hill

The newly formed committee will provide input on Regional matters including:

  • Proposed new or revised plans, legislation and initiatives from Provincial ministries, Federal departments and other agencies that affect planning issues in York Region
  • Updates and amendments to the Regional Official Plan
  • Other studies warranting additional consideration, as referred by Regional Council or staff

“As we embark on a journey to comply with new Provincial planning requirements it is important to incorporate feedback from the local community,” said City of Markham Regional Councillor Joe Li, Chair of the Region’s Planning and Economic Development. “These individuals bring a variety of experience and expertise, and I look forward to working with them.

Members appointed to the Planning Advisory Committee will serve for a term of up to four years, to coincide with the term of Regional Council. The committee’s first meeting will take place during the first quarter of 2018.
