York Region celebrates National Seniors Day

Chairment Statement Picture

Each year on October 1, Canadian’s from across the country celebrate National Seniors Day by honouring older adults and highlighting their valuable contributions to families, workplaces, communities and society.

In York Region, the population of our seniors is growing faster than any other age group. By 2031, one in every five York Region residents, or 21% of the population, will be age 65 or older.

Throughout the COVID-19 global pandemic, our seniors have been at the highest risk and suffered significantly. For many, this pandemic has resulted in isolation and separation from family and loved ones. But it’s also been many of our older residents who have stepped up to help support our communities during these trying times by raising money and supporting our community response.

In order to best support the changing senior population, York Regional Council endorsed the York Region Seniors Strategy in 2016. Seniors living in York Region make up a diverse group with varying life experiences and personal characteristics, and this strategy helps define our role in serving older adults while balancing the needs of all generations.

Our older population has shaped our country and our communities in many ways. They are trailblazers, role models and heroes who continue to play a vital role in building strong, caring and safe communities for all who call York Region home.

I encourage all York Region residents to take a moment to recognize the seniors in their life and thank them for everything they have done and continue to do for our community. On behalf of York Regional Council, I extend my deepest appreciation to our older adults and wish them a happy National Seniors Day.
