York Region celebrates Veterans’ Week

Chairment Statement Picture

Generations of Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast have stepped forward to serve and sacrifice for our country. Hundreds of thousands have fought, and continue to serve, so we have the freedom to live in peace.

In the days leading up to Remembrance Day, we celebrate Veterans’ Week and take an opportunity to learn from those who have served and sacrificed for our country.

As Canadians, we owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to our veterans who have served in both World Wars, the Korean War, the Afghanistan Mission and other military conflicts across the world. We also owe our thanks to those who continue to volunteer and serve today.

This year, as we continue to fight a global pandemic unlike anything we have seen before, it is vitally important we take the time to honour those who have fought in battles which none of us have ever had to endure.

As we continue to protect our Canadian ideas of democracy, freedom and peace, the week leading up to Remembrance Day is a time to develop a deeper understanding of the vital contributions our veterans have made to the Canada we call home.

In wearing a poppy and participating in ceremonies of remembrance, we honour those who volunteered, sacrificed, served, fought and died for our freedom.

On behalf of York Regional Council and our 1.2 million residents, I extend my deepest gratitude to our veterans, Canadians in uniform and their families. We are truly grateful.

Lest we forget.
