York Region honoured as one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People

Recognition awarded for second consecutive year

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York was again selected as one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People by Mediacorp Canada Inc., the country’s largest publisher of quality employment-related periodicals.

“York Region is proud to be recognized for our ongoing commitment to attracting and retaining young professionals,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “We value the talent, creativity and unique perspectives young professionals bring to our organization and communities. We strive to ensure they gain the experience needed for long, successful and rewarding careers.”

Canada’s Top Employers for Young People is a competition through the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, recognizing employers that offer the nation’s best workplaces and programs for young people just starting their careers. Employers are evaluated based on:

  • Career-management programs
  • Mentorship and training opportunities
  • Availability of co-op or work-study programs
  • Benefits and tuition assistance

In addition to the more than 100 courses available for employees, York Region helps students and new graduates gain relevant work experience through a variety of summer student roles and paid internships.

York Region also offers Masters-level finance graduates a two-year rotational job opportunity to gain work experience in budget development, treasury, financial reporting, procurement and information technology services through its Triple A Program.

“York Region is consistently recognized as an employer of choice due to our inclusive and diverse environment, progressive initiatives, strong corporate culture and opportunities for growth and development,” said York Region’s Chief Administrative Officer Bruce Macgregor. “Just as our young employees benefit from a supportive environment where they can learn and grow, their contributions help make York Region a stronger and more progressive organization.”

In 2016, York Region hired approximately 62 graduates into full-time, part-time and casual positions and as of January 2018, employs more than 500 professionals under the age of 30.
