York Region launching Automated Speed Enforcement Pilot Program

Newmarket – Speeding in school zones puts the lives of some of our most vulnerable residents at unnecessary risk. To emphasize to motorists the dangers of speeding, York Region is launching the Automated Speed Enforcement pilot program.

The two-year automated speed enforcement pilot includes one mobile automated speed enforcement unit rotating between 12 community safety zones across York Region.

Media is invited to join York Region staff and York Regional Police and attend the launch event.

When:

Thursday, November 12, 2020
12 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Where:

Parking is available at the Al Palladini Community Centre
9201 Islington Avenue
City of Vaughan

and

Pierre Berton Resource Library
4921 Rutherford Road
City of Vaughan

Approved by York Regional Council, the 12 automated speed enforcement pilot program locations were selected by reviewing traffic volume, school population and travel speed. These locations were identified as the highest potential risk for school children. The mobile unit will rotate monthly among these community safety zones covering 19 schools.

Automated speed enforcement is a system that uses a camera and speed measurement device to enforce speed limits in identified areas. If a vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit in an automated speed enforcement area, the automated speed enforcement system captures an image which is reviewed by a provincial offences officer. An image of the offence, licence plate and ticket with an associated fine will be mailed within the next 30 days.

COVID-19 protocols will apply including face masks or coverings required for attendees and a minimum of 2-metre distancing will be required.

York Region is responsible for the operation and maintenance of more than 4,400 lane-kilometres of roads, traffic signals, transit planning and construction.
