York Region makes $404 million investment in roads and transit infrastructure

Newmarket – York Regional Council approved $404 million to continue building road and transit system improvements in 2020, contributing to an overall $3.1 billion investment over the next 10 years to provide residents and travellers with an efficient transportation network.

“As we continue to respond to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the health and well-being of our residents remains our top priority,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “However, as we start to think about the recovery phase, this investment helps support our growing communities and provide residents and travellers with an enhanced transportation network whether walking, cycling, taking transit or driving.”

To enhance roads and transit, more than 80 construction projects are planned across the Region. These projects will include:

  • Road widenings and major intersection improvements
  • Bridge rehabilitation
  • Expansion of a bus garage
  • New bus terminal opposite the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital

“Keeping roads well maintained while continuously improving the road network supports our growing communities by expanding the ways goods and people can move throughout the Region,” said King Township Mayor Steve Pellegrini, Chair of the Region’s Transportation Services. “Advancing construction projects, expanding the transit fleet and building on the cycling and pedestrian facilities allow our communities to be connected through a variety of travel options.”

In addition to supporting growth, on-going rehabilitation programs and transit improvements help ensure growing communities have safe, reliable and efficient services.

In 2019, an investment of $256 million advanced infrastructure projects to provide a more efficient transportation network, including road widenings, additional cycling lanes and an enhanced suite of transit services.
