York Region New Community Guidelines recognized for excellence in planning

York Region receives prestigious award from Ontario Professional Planners Institute

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York has received an award from the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) in the community planning and development report category for the New Communities Guidelines.

“Residents living in complete communities have easy access to transit, amenities and parks providing great opportunities for a healthy and happy lifestyle,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “This document allows local municipalities and developers to understand how to be an active part in the future of a growing and sustainable York Region.”

The Region’s population is expected to grow to 1.79 million and 900,000 jobs by 2041. To successfully support this growth and create complete and vibrant communities, we need to ensure effective planning and implementation tools are in place. The New Communities Guidelines helps create complete communities that provide a full range of community infrastructure including human services, affordable housing and high quality urban design to create attractive and engaging public spaces.

“New communities need to be built with the priority on people and livability,” said Town of Newmarket Regional Councillor John Taylor, Chair of the Region’s Planning and Economic Development. “These guidelines help clarify the intent of the policies in the Official Plan and define strategies, and move the creation of complete communities forward in the right direction.”

The New Community Guidelines document was created to assist in the successful implementation of sustainable building and new community area policies of the York Region Official Plan, 2010. It can be used as an educational tool and resource to explain official plan policy intent, outline detailed requirements to achieve targets, and inform local planning approvals as they relate to sustainable buildings across the Region.

“OPPI’s Excellence in Planning Award recognizes excellence in all aspects of planning,” said Paul J. Stagl, President, Ontario Professional Planners Institute. “York Region has delivered exemplary planning that will make a tremendous difference in how the various communities within York Region will grow and prosper.”

OPPI is the recognized voice of the Province’s planning profession with more than 4,000 members that meet quality practice requirements and are accountable to OPPI and the public to practice ethically and to abide by a Professional Code of Practice.
