York Region prepares for weekend winter storm

Newmarket – Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for York Region. Rain and freezing rain is expected to start in York Region this Saturday, likely impacting travel.

Residents are reminded to stay safe by limiting unnecessary travel and being prepared for possible localized flooding and power outages.

If driving is necessary, please:

  • Drive according to conditions and give extra time to get to destinations
  • Have winter tires on vehicles
  • Clear snow, ice and frost from all windows, headlights, tail lights and roof
  • Make sure windshield fluid and vehicle fuel is topped up
  • Carry a roadside emergency kit
  • Slow down and respect pedestrian’s crossing the road
  • Consider taking transit and let YRT do the driving

Road conditions are monitored 24 hours a day to ensure roads are safe and passable. During the winter months this includes snow plowing, snow removal, sanding, salting and use of salt-brine to help prevent ice build up on roads.

When Environment Canada issues very specific warnings, York Region may declare a significant weather event. For more information on declaration of significant weather events, visit
