Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York has graciously received a generous donation of $55,000 from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Canadian Medical Association Foundation to help support York Region’s most vulnerable populations..

“During our uncertain times, it’s vital we all work together to respond to the COVID-19 global pandemic,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “This donation assists our efforts to protect the overall safety and well-being of everyone within our communities.”

The COVID-19 Community Response Fund for Vulnerable Populations helps areas nationwide better reach, protect and assist the most vulnerable. This includes those experiencing homelessness or dealing with mental health and substance use challenges. Funding is applied to items such as:

  • Creating dedicated spaces to support physical distancing measures
  • Medical and support services for people experiencing mental health and substance use challenges
  • Community food programs
  • Personal protective equipment for community support workers
  • Measures designed to build community resiliency and support sustainable recovery

On May 11, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities announced a $10 million funding partnership with the Canadian Medical Association Foundation to support vulnerable populations struggling with the impacts of COVID-19. York Region is one of some 70 recipients across the country to receive this funding.

“Funding will complement the support provided through federal homelessness programs,” added Chairman Emmerson. “York Region continues to advocate to senior levels of government for increased support for our residents in most need.”

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is the national voice of nearly 2,000 local governments representing more than 90% of Canadians. The Canadian Medical Association Foundation provides impactful, charitable giving to further excellence in health care, aligning to a vision of a healthy population and vibrant medical profession.
