York Region recognized as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2020 by Mediacorp Canada Inc. – the country’s largest publisher of employment-related periodicals.

This is the first time York Region has received this recognition.

“On behalf of York Regional Council and during these challenging times, I am thrilled to know York Region has been selected as one of the country’s most environmentally conscientious organizations,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “Building sustainable communities and protecting the environment is a key priority of our 2019 to 2023 Strategic Plan. Through this recognition, we are continuing to deliver on that promise.”

Canada’s Greenest Employers is administered through the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers project. In its 13th year, it recognizes employers leading the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations. According to the competition requirements, award recipients have demonstrated the development of exceptional sustainability initiatives – and are attracting people to their organizations because of their environmental leadership.

Several reasons York Region is selected as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers include:

  • Long-range plan – Vision 2051 – includes living sustainably as one of its pillars, including moving toward zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2051
  • Environmental ambassador program driven by employees to inform and educate colleagues on waste reduction, composting, forestry, energy and water conservation, reuse and recycling
  • Installation of bike racks on all transit buses and emergency bike repair stations at select bus terminals

This recognition follows York Region being named a Greater Toronto Top Employer, a Top Employer for Young People in Canada and one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for 2020 by Mediacorp Canada.

“After three awards celebrating York Region as an employer of choice this year, I congratulate our 4,500 employees for yet another amazing accomplishment this year,” said York Region Chief Administrative Officer Bruce Macgregor. “Environmental sustainability remains a key priority for us – both within our workplace and the communities we serve.”
