York Region recognized as top diversity employer in Canada

Committment to inclusion and celebration of diversity acknowledged

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York has been named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers in 2018 by Mediacorp Canada Inc., the country’s largest publisher of quality employment-related periodicals.

“As a Region, we see our growing and diverse population as a source of strength, vitality and economic opportunity,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “Being recognized as one of the country’s top diversity employers reinforces York Regional Council’s long-standing commitment to making our communities more welcoming and inclusive, a key priority of our 2015 to 2019 Strategic Plan".

Now in its 10th year, Canada’s Best Diversity Employers – administered through the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project – recognizes employers across Canada that have exceptional workplace diversity and inclusiveness programs in a variety of areas, including programs for employees from five groups: women, members of visible minorities, persons with disabilities, Aboriginal peoples and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered/Transsexual (LGBT) peoples.

York Region is considered as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for our:

•    Innovative initiatives related to the recruitment, selection and retention of diversity groups
•    Senior executive-level oversight of diversity and inclusion initiatives
•    Employee training programs related to diversity and inclusiveness
•    Engagement with external partners in the development of programs and initiatives, such as the Inclusion Charter of York Region

“This award is a testament to the ongoing work we do to position York Region as a leading employer of choice,” said York Region Chief Administrative Officer Bruce Macgregor. “We remain committed to fostering an environment where all people feel welcomed and are provided with the opportunity to flourish. Later this year, we will endorse our first corporate Inclusion Charter which reaffirms our vision for an inclusive organization that attracts and retains the best talent, promotes innovation and provides an excellent customer experience.”

The recognition as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers follows York Region’s selection earlier this year as one of the country’s Top Employers for Young People.
