York Region responds to modified Stage 2 restrictions

Chairment Statement Picture

The Government of Ontario today announced modified Stage 2 COVID-19 restrictions will be in place in Toronto, Ottawa and Peel Region effective Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 12:01 a.m. for a minimum 28 days.

Restrictions include the closure of indoor dining and drinking in bars and restaurants, and the closure of gyms, fitness centres, cinemas, performing art and gaming venues. Organized public gatherings will be reduced to 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors.

As positive cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Ontario, York Regional Council and York Region’s Medical Officer of Health applaud the provincial government and the Chief Medical Officer of Health for taking difficult but decisive action to help stop the spread of this virus.

Over the past two weeks, York Region is experiencing increasing numbers of daily COVID-19 cases. This is concerning. Without on-going cooperation of all our residents to follow public health advice, these numbers will continue in an upward trend, bringing York Region increasingly closer to having similar provincial restrictions implemented across our nine cities and towns.

We continue to work with partners in the provincial government to monitor emerging COVID-19 trends. The data will inform if York Region warrants inclusion in the modified restrictions.

We recognize this is not the news any of us wish to hear, and further restrictions are difficult on individuals, families and businesses. We are grateful for all who chose to live, work and do business in our communities. By working together and supporting each other we will get through this second wave of COVID-19.

With the Thanksgiving long weekend upon us, we remind York Region residents of the vital importance of following public health measures, including staying at home when feeling ill, maintaining physical distancing, washing your hands frequently with soap and water, limiting gatherings to those in your immediate household and wearing a face mask or covering when physical distancing is not possible.

COVID-19 is a very real threat. We must each continue to do our part to keep everyone safe.
