York Region's agriculture industry valued at over six billion dollars



York Regional Council approves five strategic goals to further support agri-food community

Newmarket – The economic impact of The Regional Municipality of York’s agri-food chain is valued at over six billion dollars. This finding is part of the York Region Agriculture and Agri-food Update and Strategy report, shared with York Regional Council.

“Thanks to the outstanding commitment of our farming families, as well as recent agri-business investments made by this council, York Region remains a leading contributor to Ontario’s agriculture industry,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “York Region’s unique balance of urban city building and protected rural lands makes it the ideal location for all types of businesses to want to invest here."

York Regional Council recognizes 17 local Canada 150 Farm Families who have supported agriculture in York Region for 150 years or more.

The report is guided by the following key strategic recommendations:

  1. Strengthen communication and collaboration with York Region, local municipalities and the agri-food sector
  2. Support the agri-food sector through integrated land use planning and economic development
  3. Support increased capacity for value added processing and support services
  4. Leverage the Region’s location within the Greater Toronto Area through direct farm marketing to meet demand for local food production
  5. Provide support for business retention and expansion of primary agricultural production within York Region

“The power of the farming community as a significant economic driver should not be underestimated, “said City of Markham Regional Councillor Joe Li, Chair of the Region’s Planning and Economic Development. “The strategic recommendations outlined in the Agriculture and Agri-food strategy report will further protect and promote agriculture and farming in York Region.”

Additional highlights in the report include:

  • York Region’s agriculture industry valued at over six billion dollars
  • There are 3,578 full time equivalent jobs in primary agricultural production and 57,000 jobs in the full agri-food sector in York Region
  • There is an increase in employees working in manufacturing plants, restaurants and grocery stores within York Region
  • The average size of farms in York Region has increased

The York Region Agriculture and Agri-food Update and Strategy report was created in collaboration between York Regional staff, the York Region Agricultural Advisory Liaison Group and more than 140 industry stakeholders including food producers, the restaurant industry and residents.
