York Region Transit implementing additional service changes in response to COVID-19

Changes in effect as of Sunday, April 5, 2020

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York and York Region Transit (YRT) recognize and thank all front-line staff who continue to ensure our residents are well-cared for during this unprecedented time.

YRT supports messages from public health agencies encouraging residents to stay home, only travelling when necessary and practicing physical distancing as much as possible. 

With additional closures and more people staying at home, ridership on transit has decreased. YRT is temporarily further reducing service levels starting Sunday, April 5 to meet current customer demands.

While people have been asked to stay at home as much as possible, there are many York Region residents who continue to rely on YRT. We remain committed to delivering on the exceptional service residents have come to expect.

YRT will continue to monitor ridership patterns and make additional service adjustments, as required.

In an effort to help slow the spread of COVID-19, and the continued support of the health and safety of passengers and staff, commuters are reminded to board the bus at the middle or rear doors. This applies to all YRT and Viva routes. Travellers are asked to pay fares before boarding, where possible, or pay when you depart the bus at the station or terminal.

Passengers with mobility issues requiring assistance will still be able to board using the front doors.

These processes support the need for physical distancing between transit operators and passengers. Additional measures in place include daily disinfection and cleaning of buses, terminals and rapidway stations with a focus on high-touch surfaces such as poles, seats and handles.
