Transit ridership facts

Newmarket – York Region Transit (YRT/Viva) ridership reached 23.1 million in 2017. This is an increase of 300,000 riders or 1.2 per cent, when compared to 2016 ridership statistics.

“In 2017, York Region was the first in Canada for so many new transit initiatives, including the first mobile pay fare and the first opening of a GTA subway service in over 40 years,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “In 2018, we will continue to invest in innovative transit options, which support and enhance the diverse transit needs of our growing communities.”

These ridership statistics and system performance updates are contained in the 2017 Transit Performance report, compiled by York Region Transit (YRT) and recently presented to York Regional Council. Additional highlights in the report include:

  • Increased ridership of 2.6 per cent to York Region’s Viva rapid transit bus service, with an average of 24,134 travellers per weekday
  • Maintained a revenue-to-cost ratio of 40 per cent on YRT conventional transit
  • Implemented Wi-Fi at all YRT transit terminals
  • Launched the YRT Live Chat service

“Well-planned transit helps to shape and connect our communities,” said Town of Richmond Hill Regional Councillor Vito Spatafora, Chair of the Region’s Transportation Services. “To build on this transit ridership growth, initiatives like the Frequent Transit Network (FTN) identified in the Region’s Transportation Master Plan will help to strengthen our reliable and efficient transit system and attract new ridership.”
