York Region welcomes $9.92 million in additional Safe Restart funding

Chairment Statement Picture

On behalf of York Regional Council and The Regional Municipality of York I wish to acknowledge and thank all levels of government for their continued commitment to support Canadians during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Today, the Government of Ontario announced the allocation of an additional $695 million to help municipalities across the province continue to provide critical services while recovering from the COVID-19 global pandemic.

York Region will receive $9.92 million of this funding, building off significant investments made through phase one of the Safe Restart Funding Agreement. Each of our nine municipalities will also receive funding.

Throughout 2020, York Region has worked hard to keep essential services running, while also protecting the health, safety and well-being of our residents. This includes providing reliable and safe travel options for those residents who rely on transit to travel around our Region.

Through this funding, York Region can maintain the essential services residents depend on, while continuing to invest in critical infrastructure projects to drive economic growth and be critical to our recovery.

On behalf York Region and our 1.2 million residents, I again thank our partners at all levels of government for their sustained support of municipalities. I look forward to our continued work with our federal and provincial counterparts to ensure this funding supports the economic vitality of our communities.

Wayne Emmerson

York Region Chairman and CEO
