14th annual Family Fun Day and charity barbecue to be held at Region's transit facility in Richmond Hill

Newmarket – The Regional Municipality of York is hosting its annual Family Fun Day and open house on Saturday, May 26. Family Fun Day is a free, interactive, family-oriented event to celebrate National Public Works Week and promote public awareness of the many services operated by York Region.

National Public Works Week will be celebrated May 20 to 26, 2018 and is recognized across North America as an opportunity to showcase public works services and how they connect our communities. This year’s theme is The Power of Public Works.

When:

Saturday, May 26 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where:

York Region Transit Operations, Maintenance and Storage Facility
55 Orlando Drive
Town of Richmond Hill

All money raised will be donated to 360° Kids, an organization helping youth overcome crisis and transition to safety and stability. Family Fun Day activities include:

  • Tour our facility:
    • See how York Region Transit buses are washed
    • Visit interactive displays from our public works teams
    • Enjoy live demonstrations
  • Watch live CPR demonstrations
  • Charity barbecue (11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
  • Garden mulch with cash donation to 360° Kids
  • Free plants offered by LEAF
  • Meet Pylon Pete, Barkley the Tree, Toby the Bus and Parry the Paramedic
  • Chances to win a York Region Paramedic prize bag, a $25 PRESTO card and a rain barrel

Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests logoYork Region has partnered with Local Enhancement & Appreciation of Forests (LEAF).

A non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the urban forest.

Vote on your favourite painted plow

York Region is hosting a plow blade painting contest. Eight schools across the Region have been provided with a plow blade, paint brushes and colourful non-toxic paint, with students asked to paint the blade in a public works theme.

All painted plow blades will be on display and residents can vote for their favourite during York Region’s Family Fun Day.

Free Shuttle Service available

Free shuttle service will be available for visitors parking at 50 High Tech Road to the event at 55 Orlando Drive.

In York Region, public works staff promotes and supports services that connect communities within the Region.

These services include:

  • Providing safe and clean drinking water
  • Maintaining and protecting York Regional Forest
  • Road maintenance and infrastructure
  • York Region Transit
  • Operating facilities
  • Waste management
