YRT/Viva fare changes coming July 1, 2017

Changes include the end of two-zone fares

Newmarket – On July, 1, 2017 a number of changes will be taking place on YRT/Viva, including the end of two-zone fares, going paperless and fare adjustments for transit riders.

YRT/Viva will be removing fare zones across the Region. Customers will be able to travel across York Region with only one fare – the two hour travel window will still apply.

YRT/Viva is also going paperless and will no longer sell tickets or paper passes. Customers can purchase their fares using a PRESTO card, YRT/Viva Pay app or cash. Paper tickets and paper passes will be accepted until the end of 2017.

The new mobile payment app, YRT/Viva Pay, allows customers to purchase fares anytime, anywhere, through the convenience of their smartphones. YRT/Viva Pay will be available for free in the App Store and Google Play beginning July 1, 2017.

PRESTO is the electronic fare card option used throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Customers can load money or a monthly transit pass on their PRESTO card. Tap your card on a PRESTO device at the beginning of your journey to pay for your transit ride.

Currently, PRESTO does not yet provide a way to pay both TTC and YRT/Viva fare using a PRESTO card. Customers using TTC in York Region are advised not to use PRESTO, and continue using paper tickets or passes sold at select southern municipal fare agent locations or with the new YRT/Viva Pay app starting July 1. TTC is working with PRESTO on a solution, which will be communicated once available.

In the fall of 2016, York Regional Council approved a 2017 to 2019 fare strategy for YRT/Viva with fare adjustments occurring on July 1, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Fare adjustments offset operating costs and support the cost of delivering service.

Presto Fare Changes

The YRT/Viva Student Category will be renamed Youth to create consistency with other Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area transit agencies. There will be no change to qualifying ages.
