Be a true Canadian this Canada Day

Canada Day is a national celebration that brings Canadians together, eh.

Although this year’s celebrations will be different compared to prior years, York Region residents can still gather and show their national pride virtually.

The Government of Canada is encouraging all Canadians to unite online this July 1 to share their national pride at Oh Canada! Canada Day 2020. Celebrations include two live shows, a host of watch-any-time videos and a number of celebration kits.

Closer to home, many of our local cities and towns are taking the festivities online by hosting virtual celebrations that include everything from music and entertainment to family fun and of course, fireworks.

Celebrations happening across York Region on July 1 include:

  • The Town of Aurora is offering a number of activities during a week-long Canada Day celebration
  • The Town of East Gwillimbury is celebrating from June 24 to July 1
  • The Town of Georgina is celebrating July 1 online with trivia, a classic car show and fireworks
  • The City of Markham will host a Canada Day virtual experience that unites the city’s diverse community
  • The Town of Newmarket’s Tim Hortons Kanata Festival provides an opportunity to show national pride from home
  • The City of Richmond Hill’s virtual Canada Day celebration will include music, cooking demonstrations and a virtual petting zoo
  • The City of Vaughan’s virtual celebration featuring a special online concert from The Barenaked Ladies

York Region invites you to show us how Canadian you are by celebrating while keeping you and your family safe. Share your Canada Day spirit by sharing your photos using #SpiritofYR.

If you and your family plan to host a gathering, do some shopping, enjoy a local trail, park or visit a beach as part of your Canada Day celebrations, residents are reminded:

To stay a Canadian flag length (2 metres) apart Sing O-Canada while washing your hands Saying ‘sorry’ to those you cannot invite to your 10-person gathering Wear a 2-layer mask, eh!
