Be in the know about HOV lanes in York Region

HOV Lanes

High Occupancy Vehicle Lanes

High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes are reserved for exclusive use by buses, carpooling vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles and scooters. HOV lanes move more people through busy corridors in fewer vehicles. They save travel time and fuel, and make public transit times more reliable.

HOV lanes also benefit the environment by providing incentives for travellers to use alternative modes of transportation and reducing emissions.

HOV Lane and Bus

The Map of HOV Lanes shows York Region’s growing network of HOV lanes and Transit Rapidways.

Using HOV Lanes

HOV lanes are located in the curbside lanes and operate during peak traffic periods. During off-peak times, all vehicles can use the HOV lanes.

HOV lane locations

The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario website has guidelines about driving in HOV lanes.

Transit Rapidways

HOV and Bus Lanes

Transit rapidways are centre lanes dedicated for the exclusive use of rapid transit buses. Removing Viva, York Region’s rapid transit vehicles, out of mixed traffic allows convenient and reliable transit that can operate up to 30 per cent faster and avoid traffic congestion.
