The Regional Municipality of York is one step closer to establishing a wholly-owned corporation to operate the York Telecom Network (YTN), York Region’s dark fibre optic network.

During the October 2017 Council meeting, in addition to approving the hiring of a General Manager, York Regional Council appointed the following Board Members to oversee the governance of the corporation.

  • York Region Chairman and CEO: Wayne Emmerson
  • Mayor Virginia Hackson, Town of East Gwillimbury
  • Mayor Steven Pellegrini, Township of King
  • Mayor Margaret Quirk, Town of Georgina
  • Mayor A.J. (Tony) Van Bynen, Town of Newmarket
  • Mayor Frank Scarpitti, City of Markham
  • Mayor Geoffrey Dawe, Town of Aurora
  • Regional Councillor Jim Jones, City of Markham
  • Regional Councillor Gino Rosati, City of Vaughan

Once it begins operations in January 2018, the new corporation is expected to deliver cost savings for MUSH (municipalities, universities, school boards and hospitals) partners. It is also anticipated to attract investment and improvements in broadband availability by service providers.

For more information view the York Telecom Network Implementation and Board Appointment report.

Additional information will be released to MUSH partners in the coming weeks.
