Celebrate Agriculture and Eat Local

Food brings people together. Whether it’s to share a meal, grow a business or collaborate on innovations, local food feeds our economy, our communities and our families.

In York Region, we recognize Ontario Agriculture Week by celebrating the diverse mix of farmers, producers, distributors, retailers and restaurants that help grow our economy and bring fresh local food to our tables.

From the rich soils of the Holland Marsh to a thriving food and beverage industry, local food is an important part of the York Region economy.

Home to more than 700 farm-based businesses, York Region farmers produce everything from fruits, vegetables, meats and eggs to maple syrup, honey and wine. An additional 270 food and beverage manufacturers process and package locally sourced food that is sold to restaurants and retailers in York Region and beyond.

Completing the farm to fork journey, retailers and restaurants help consumers access locally grown, processed or packaged food by selling and cooking made in York Region products.

For consumers, eating locally grown and produced food is one of the best ways to support the agriculture and agri-food sector. Not only is the food fresher and better for the environment, but when you eat local you support a sector that provides approximately 57,000 jobs and contributes $2.7 billion to the York Region economy every year.

From farm to fork there are countless reasons to #loveyr, and York Region continues to demonstrate our love of locally grown and produced food through our Agriculture and Agri-Food Strategy. Outlining the strengths, opportunities and challenges within the York Region food sector, this strategy also provides direction to protect and promote agriculture, farming and agri-food across our communities.

As we move into the harvest season residents are reminded the important role local food plays in our economy, our communities and our families – and are encouraged to support our local agriculture and agri-food sector by cooking fresh and shopping for locally grown and produced products.
