Celebrating Canada’s Agriculture Day

A picture of a woman's hands carrying small crate of vegetables

There are over 700 unique farms located throughout York Region and on Canada’s Agriculture Day, we’re celebrating and recognizing the importance of agriculture in our communities. In York Region alone, the broader agri-food sector – everything from farms to food processors and retailers – provides over 57,000 jobs and contributes more than $2.7 billion to our local economy.

Located at the north-end of York Region, ClearWater Farm is a perfect example of honouring the past while embracing the future.

The farm sits on a historic property by Lake Simcoe owned by an early settler family for over 180 years. It was leased to the Ontario Water Centre by the Town of Georgina in 2015, and they’ve been busy ever since.

Farmed as part of a 130-acre homestead in the 1800s, its sloping banks near Roger’s Reservoir hadn’t been tended for decades. Since then, Sally invested countless hours to learn how to successfully develop and implement her vision of an organic farm designed around the principles of permaculture.

Supporting our agriculture and agri-food sector

York Region is committed to supporting our vibrant and thriving agriculture and agri-food sector. This work is being guided by the Agriculture and Agri-Food Sector Strategy – an action plan that was endorsed by York Regional Council in 2017.

With five strategic goal areas accompanied by 45 recommended actions, the strategy is an ambitious framework designed to achieve results and demonstrates York Region’s commitment to the sector. Efforts are supported by York Region’s Agriculture and Agri-Food Advisory Committee.
