Celebrating parents

June 1 is Global Day of Parents – an opportunity to celebrate the important impact parents have in the lives of children.

At York Region, we know parenting isn’t always easy. Some days you feel on top of the world and other days you feel like a failure. Whether you are a parent-to-be, first time parent or seasoned parent, York Region is here to support and guide you so you may raise strong, confident and healthy children at all ages and stages of life.

Some of the programs available for parents include:

  • Transition to Parenting: The Transition to Parenting program is for mothers with babies up to one year of age and pregnant women who are experiencing mood changes, including anxiety or depression, or are looking for support while adjusting to parenthood. This program provides information, support and resources to help women cope and feel better.
    • The importance of breastfeeding to the health of moms and children
    • Tips for successful breastfeeding
    • Strategies to work through breastfeeding challenges
  • Family Drop in CentresThe All Our Kids (AOK) Early Child Development and Parenting Programs are free, structured, drop-in programs that support play and inquiry-based learning for children from birth to age six in York Region. They are places for parents, expectant parents, grandparents and caregivers (including home child care providers) to:
    • Have fun with their children
    • Meet other parents, grandparents and caregivers
    • Access information, referrals and other specialized services in the community

York Region offers a range of nutrition programs, resource and services to promote healthy eating, access to healthy food and the development of supportive nutrition environments.
  • Special Needs services: The years between birth and school-entry are critical to a child’s development. Services are available for children who live in York Region or attend licensed child care in York Region, are at risk due to prematurity, low birth weight or other birth complications, have delays in development or have a diagnosis such as autism. York Region offers child development screenings and assessments, individual program plans for your child, activities that teach your child new skills and promote development and much more.
  • Finding child care and child care subsidies: York Region helps make child care more affordable for families with low and moderate income by paying some or all of the cost of child care directly to the child care provider. Our Early Years Program Finder allows parents and caregivers to search for licensed child care centres, family drop-in programs and EarlyON Child and Family Centres in York Region.

Whatever your struggle or your success, York Region is here with programs, support and resources to guide you along the way. Happy Global Day of Parents!
