Celebrating parents

June 1 is Global Day of Parents – an opportunity to celebrate the important impact parents have in the lives of children.

At York Region, we know parenting isn’t always easy. Some days you feel on top of the world and other days you feel like a failure. As the anchors of the family, many parents are shouldering even more responsibility during the COVID-19 pandemic to safely shelter, care and provide for their children.

Whether you are a parent-to-be, first time parent or seasoned parent, here are some valuable resources and tips as you raise strong, confident and healthy children at all ages and stages of life.

Take care of yourself. Take actions that give you a better sense of personal control. Stress management skills such as mindfulness and/or deep breathing can help reduce stress. Pregnancy or having a baby is not always easy. The adjustment to parenthood can be challenging for many families. This can lead to mood changes or even perinatal mood disorders (PMD). Remember to keep healthy and safe, and avoid behaviour that might increase your stress. Visit Mental Health and Wellness in Pregnancy and Parenthood for valuable resources.

Check in regularly with your child. Remind them you care and they can talk to you anytime. Don’t forget to make time to have some fun, and if you are ever worried or confused, it’s ok to reach out for help.  These are uncertain times, but you don’t have to go it alone. Maintain everyday family routines. Things may feel chaotic and unpredictable, but your home doesn't have to. Try to keep to usual rising times, mealtimes and bedtimes. Consider making a daily schedule and involve children in working out any new routines.

Thanks to a new collaboration between York Region Early Intervention Services and agencies providing EarlyON child and family programs and services in York Region, parents can now speak with an Early Years professional over the phone about suggestions and strategies like creating routines for mealtime, bedtime, independent play and more. Visit york.ca/EarlyON to learn more.

Build positive eating habits. A positive relationship with food starts early in life with healthy eating habits. York Region offers a range of nutrition programs, resource and services to promote healthy eating, access to healthy food and the development of supportive nutrition environments.

Development starts early: The years between birth and school-entry are critical to a child’s development. Services are available for children who live in York Region or attend licensed child care in York Region, are at risk due to prematurity, low birth weight or other birth complications, have delays in development or have a diagnosis such as autism. Early Interview Services (EIS) is offering virtual meetings (through telephone and Zoom videoconference) to families currently enrolled in the programs instead of in-person consultations.

Reassure your children. Let them know your family is your top priority. Use reassuring words like, “I’m your parent, it’s my job to keep you safe and we are doing everything we can.”

Most importantly, enjoy your time as parents. For more information on parenting support and programs, please visit york.ca/parenting
