York Region supports Metrolinx’s Regional Transportation Pla

Metrolinx has introduced its 2041 Regional Transportation Plan seeking to align the transportation network in the Greater Toronto Area with land use. This plan aligns with York Region’s land use and transportation planning strategy, and the Region will continue to work with Metrolinx to enact the strategic items included in the plan through the 2018 Ridership Growth Study, including:

  • Completing the delivery of current regional transit projects
  • Connect more of the GTA with frequent rapid transit and GO Transit’s Regional Express Rail program
  • Optimize transportation to addressing first and last-mile transit connections
  • Integrate land use and transportation through urban intensification
  • Prepare for the future with plans to address climate change and incorporate analytics and data

York Region is supportive of the Regional Transportation Plan with a few additions, including:

  • Delineating both phases of the Downtown Relief Line project
  • Include Bus Rapid Transit on Yonge Street north of Davis Drive and on Green Lane to connect to East Gwillimbury GO Station
  • Include Major Mackenzie Drive, east of Leslie Street to Don Cousins Parkway, as a future bus rapid transit corridor
  • Opposition to any increase in freight rail traffic through the Region

According to Mr. Sam Zimmerman, a Senior Urban Transit Specialist with the World Bank who has also has over 45 years of experience with the United States Department of Transportation and transit projects globally, York Region continues to be a leader in the public transit industry and does work that compliments much of what is involved in the Regional Transportation Plan, including focusing on rapid transit and developing high frequency corridors with Viva and developing new forms of mobility transit through initiatives such as Mobility Plus.

The Regional Transportation Plan is scheduled to be presented to the Metrolinx Board by the end of 2017 and York Region will continue to work with Metrolinx on implementation of this plan.
