Earth Hour Is March 30. How Will You Celebrate?

From 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

earth hour

A romantic candle-lit dinner? A winter’s night walk under the stars? S’mores and stories around a campfire? #Connect2Earth by turning off the lights for one hour and showing love for our beautiful planet.

Starting as a “symbolic lights out” event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour is now the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring millions of people, across the world, to take action to improve the health of nature. As various environmental challenges impact and staggering biodiversity loss threaten our planet, Earth Hour 2018-2020 endeavours to spark never-before-had conversations on the loss of nature and the urgent need to protect it.

Every year people, businesses and landmarks set aside an hour to host events, switch off their lights and make noise for the Earth Hour movement. This year, we want to celebrate the diversity of life on Earth and we want you to invite your friends and family to celebrate too! York Region will switch off all non-essential lights at the following four Regional buildings:

  • York Region Administrative Centre, 17250 Yonge Street, Town of Newmarket
  • York Region South Services Centre, 50 High Tech Road, Town of Richmond Hill
  • York Region Transportation Operations Centre, 90 Bales Drive, Town of East Gwillimbury
  • York Region Community and Health Services, 9060 Jane Street, City of Vaughan

Don’t worry, if you haven’t made Earth Hour plans yet, we have you covered. Here are six ways you can have some fun while showing love for our planet:

  1. Invite friends and family over for a candle-lit dinner or game night
  2. Play flashlight tag with your kids
  3. Enjoy moonlit cross-country skiing or snowshoeing
  4. Call someone you haven’t talked to in a while
  5. Take a nap (who couldn’t use some extra Zzz’s?)
  6. Have your family draw self-portraits in the dark

We want to know how you plan to celebrate. Share your ideas on Facebook and Twitter using #Connect2Earth
