Embracing Diversity and Inclusion - World Cultural Day

York Region is a place where diversity is celebrated. As one of the fastest growing se communities in Canada, York Region is made up of 1.2 million residents, representing all ages, backgrounds and interests.

York Region is a mosaic of cultures, stories and voices:

  • More than 51,000 recent immigrants live in York Region (immigrants who arrived in Canada between 2011 and 2016)
  • There are more than 120 different spoken languages and over 230 distinct ethnic origins
  • 47 per cent (515,225) of York Region residents were born outside of Canada, which is the third highest in Ontario behind Peel and Toronto
  • The City of Markham is Canada’s most ethnically diverse community with 78% of the population identifying as a visible minority

In June 2018, York Regional Council endorsed The Inclusion Charter for York Region, which brings together businesses, community organizations and agencies, municipalities, police services, hospitals, school boards and conservation authorities with a common commitment to welcoming and inclusive communities.

The Inclusion Charter embraces all dimensions of diversity. It is grounded in the belief that our greatest strength is the ability to bring people together to build a welcoming community that celebrates and values the differences and contributions of everyone.

May 21 is the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. York Region recognizes this day as an opportunity to showcase our commitment to a creating a welcoming and inclusive community where diversity is celebrated and acknowledged as a source of strength, vitality and economic opportunity.
