Emergency Management Conference Update

Chairman Emmerson speaking at Emergency Managment Conference

York Region’s Emergency Management Program recently hosted the 2017 Inter-Municipal Emergency Training and Education Conference. The theme was Emergency Management Trends: Forces Shaping the Present and Future. Close to 200 attendees from local municipalities learned about some of the trends and emerging threats impacting York Region. Forces include the opioid crisis, cyber-attacks and climate change.

The conference touched on a number of emergency management issues York Regional Council is already taking a pro-active approach on. For example, to address the ongoing opioid crisis, which was the focus of the morning sessions, York Region is expanding its Harm Reduction program. This demonstrates York Region’s commitment to better support local opioid response initiatives, including the distribution of the opioid antidote – naloxone – to eligible community organizations and service providers.

At the emergency management conference, through the York Region Opioid Working Group, York Region’s Public Health staff facilitated a group exercise based on a fentanyl overdose scenario at a Halloween party.

Other highlights included keynote speaker David Phillips, Canada’s most quotable weather expert, discussing climate change and severe weather patterns from an emergency management perspective. A list of all speakers is available in the conference program.
