  4. York Region worked closely with all nine local cities and towns to complete a Connect to Innovate funding application which will invest $500 million by 2021, to bring high-speed Internet to 300 rural and remote communities in Canada. The funding is crucial for York Region to support underserved communities, including the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation as well as the municipalities of East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King Township and Whitchurch-Stouffville.

Since 2015, the York Region Broadband Strategy and Advisory Task Force has been imperative in providing guidance on activities pertaining to the Broadband Strategy. The Task Force was initiated and funded in partnership with all nine local municipalities. The progress made demonstrates York Regional Council’s commitment to improving broadband, which is one of the Region’s key priorities and displays progress in enabling access to high-speed Internet, one of the grounding principles of York Region's Economic Development Action Plan.
