Know before you go: visiting York Region’s courthouses

York Region’s two Provincial Offences Courts front counters are now serving the public.

Visitors can attend the courthouses located at 17150 Yonge Street in the Town of Newmarket or 50 High Tech Road in the City of Richmond Hill to access the front counter in-person services.  Many services do not require a physical visit to a courthouse. The public is encouraged to use available online services when possible to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

If you must attend, here is how to plan for and what to expect during your visit.

Before entering the facility, visitors are required to complete an online COVID-19 screening form. If a visitor cannot complete the screening online, a York Region staff member stationed at the entrance of the building can provide screening.

Visitors will also be asked for the purpose of the visit. Visitors should note courtrooms remain closed and all in-person Provincial Offences Act (POA) court matters scheduled from Monday, March 16, 2020 through to and including Friday, October 16, 2020 are adjourned and will be rescheduled to a later date at the direction of the Ontario Court of Justice. If you have received a trial notice or summons for a date up to and including October 16, 2020, there is no need to attend court. A notice of a new court date will be sent by mail to the address on file. If you notice is for a date after October 16, 2020, please visit york.ca/courts to see if court closures have been extended.

If screening results allow, visitors will then be asked to wear a face covering before entering the building. Disposable face covering will be provided for those who do not have one. Face masks or coverings are required unless exempt.

Visitors are also kindly asked to respect all health and safety protocols for the safety of all visitors and staff, including:

  • Staying home if you are ill
  • Using hand sanitizing stations frequently
  • Staying 2 metres apart from others
  • Respecting signage, markers and barriers
  • Limiting the number of visitors you bring with you
  • Being respectful and kind to staff and fellow visitors
