Leslie Street and St. John's Sideroad Road Improvements

Transforming Leslie Street and St. John’s Sideroad

The Regional Municipality of York is investing in building a safe, efficient and reliable Regional transportation network for all users.
Improvements to Leslie Street and St. John’s Sideroad in the Town of Aurora, Town of Newmarket and Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville are underway to accommodate growth and improve traffic flow.
Improvements include:
- Widening Leslie Street to four lanes from Wellington Street to Mulock Drive to improve traffic flow
- Widening St. John’s Sideroad to four lanes from Bayview Avenue to Leslie Street to meet the needs of travellers in the area
- Enhancing street lighting, installing on-street bike lanes, constructing sidewalks, building a multi-use path and improving landscaping to support cycling and walking along Regional roads and provide more travel options for residents
- Replacing existing culverts with larger culverts or bridges to allow for the safe passage of fish and wildlife and to improve creek flow
- Replacing and updating traffic signals to improve intersection accessibility to meet the needs of our communities today and into the future
- Reconnecting 14 kilometres of water course by removing barriers and enhancing existing streams to allow for more fish habitat
Construction Update
Phase 1: Leslie Street from Broughton Lane to Mulock Drive
- The project is complete
Phase 2: St. John’s Sideroad to Woodbine Avenue
- The following improvements are complete:

- Road widening between Bayview Avenue and Leslie Street
- Final road work, paving and road rehabilitation from east of Leslie Street to Woodbine Avenue
- Sanitary sewer installation east of Leslie Street
- Outstanding improvements include:

- Slope repairs on St. John’s Sideroad. This work is anticipated to be completed by November 2020
- Installing street lighting on St. John’s Sideroad between William Graham Drive and Leslie Street. This work is anticipated to be completed in early 2021
- Final repair of deficiencies on the multi-use path. This is anticipated to be completed by spring 2021
- Temporary lane closures may be required between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to complete this work
Phase 3: Leslie Street from Don Hillock Drive to Broughton Lane
- The following improvements are complete:

- Road widening between Don Hillock Drive and Broughton Lane
- Installation and extension of large drainage culverts
- Installation of pedestrian underpassesto be used in the future for cycling and walking
- Outstanding improvements include:

- Final repair of deficiencies to the sidewalk and multi-use path along Leslie Street. This work is anticipated to be completed by early 2021
- Temporary lane closures may be required between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to complete this work

traffic and road information in open data, used by many apps.
This work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or delays related to COVID-19 Public Health guidelines. York Region will provide advance notice whenever possible.
