Major Mackenzie Drive from Highway 400 to Jane Street
Construction starts: October 2020 | Anticipated completion: end of 2022
The Regional Municipality of York is investing in building a safe, efficient and reliable Regional transportation network for all users. Improvements to Major Mackenzie Drive from Highway 400 to Jane Street in the City of Vaughan began in fall 2020 to accommodate growth, improve traffic flow and provide more travel options for all.
We care about your community and are committed to delivering transportation improvements safely, while minimizing disruptions as best as possible. We’re building, reconstructing and repairing Regional roads for you, your community and the future of the City of Vaughan.
Improvements include:
- Widening from four to six lanes
- Widening and rehabilitating the two bridges located both east and west of Wellness Way and Amusement Drive
- Reconfiguring the bridge over Highway 400 including adjusting and reconfiguring the on/off ramps
- Enhancing the existing boulevards, including upgrading sidewalks, crosswalks, street lighting and tree planting
- Installing a dedicated multi-use path. The existing path west of Highway 400, will be extended east over Highway 400 to Jane Street
The Major Mackenzie Drive improvements are being undertaken in stages to minimize disruption to the travelling public and integrate with the other adjacent projects in the area.
Stage 1
- Work will begin on Major Mackenzie Drive between Highway 400 and Jane Street, including widening the Major Mackenzie Drive bridge over Coaster Way
- In order to widen Major Mackenzie Drive at this location, a temporary closure of Coaster Way is required. Coaster Way from Amusement Drive to Wellness Way will be closed from October 2020 and will re-open in spring 2021
- Major Mackenzie Drive will remain open to traffic during this time
- Local access will be maintained
Impacts to traffic throughout the project:
- Off-peak lane reductions may be required between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- The eastbound left-turn lanes at Jane Street and Major Mackenzie Drive will be maintained
- Night work with lane reductions may be required to advance construction during the hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
There are other road projects happening near this project. York Region Transit is building a new bus terminal, in addition to the construction of the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital. For more information, visit the Vaughan Construction Projects page.
