The Regional Municipality of York is investing in building a safe, effi cient and reliable Regional transportation network for all users. On behalf of the City of Vaughan, we are making improvements to the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive at Vaughan City Hall.


Construction began: September 2020  |  Anticipated completion: early summer 2021

Construction Update

Construction began in September 2020 and was anticipated to be completed by the end of 2020. Due to unexpected site conditions and current weather conditions, construction has stopped for the winter and will resume in spring 2021. The project is anticipated to be completed in early summer 2021. Outstanding utility work will be taking place from January to March prior to construction activities resuming in the spring.

Work that has been completed includes:

  • Widened the south side of Major Mackenzie Drive to install a dedicated westbound left-turn lane, as well as a dedicated eastbound right-turn lane into City Hall
  • Widened the City Hall entrance

Upcoming work in spring 2021 includes:

  • Completing the reconstruction of the City Hall entrance, including curb work
  • Installing permanent traffic signals at the intersection
  • Final top layer of asphalt paving and line markings
  • Installing a landscaped boulevard on the south side of the road

Impacts to traffic throughout the project:

  • During the utility work between January and March, there will be no impacts to traffic
  • Once work continues in spring 2021, impacts to traffic include:
    • Off-peak lane closures will be required between 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
    • Night work may be required over a couple of nights for paving, near the end of construction

This work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or delays related to COVID-19 Public Health guidelines. York Region will provide advance notice whenever possible.

Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of this project?

  • There are currently no dedicated turning lanes in front of Vaughan City Hall, making it difficult for residents and employees to access the building. Installing dedicated turning lanes will make access to the property easier, while reducing traffic impediments in both directions along Major Mackenzie Drive

Are there any lane closures or reductions associated with this project?

  • Lane closures may be required to facilitate work throughout the project

Will there be any night work?

  • Night work may be required over a couple of nights for paving, near the end of construction

Can pedestrians and cyclists still use the road?

  • Yes, the sidewalk on the north side of Major Mackenzie Drive will be maintained throughout construction

Are any bus shelters or transit stops being relocated during construction?

  • Transit stops may be relocated during construction and signs will be placed on the street to notify pedestrians of the new locations
  • Bus shelters and waste units may also be temporarily removed
