If you live in York Region and you plan to visit a commercial establishment be prepared to put on a mask.  The Regional Municipality of York’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Karim Kurji issued instructions that, effective Friday, July 17, at 12:01 a.m., require operators of indoor retail establishments and organizations to have a policy in place that prohibits persons from entering premises of the establishment if the person is not wearing a non-medical face covering, subject to appropriate exemptions.

Any customer, employee or visitor who enters a commercial business must wear a mask or face covering. All business owners and operators in York Region must have policies in place to stop people from entering if they are not wearing a face covering.

Non-medical face masks and face coverings, such as bandanas or cloth masks, are an easy and effective way to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.

Important Facts for Face Coverings

  • Face coverings should use at least two layers of tightly woven fabric
  • Use a combination of high thread count cotton with other materials such as silk, chiffon or flannel
  • Masks should not be made with non-breathable materials such as plastic; or materials which can easily fall apart, such as paper tissues
  • Cloth or disposable masks can be re-used throughout the day if clean and intact
  • Do not place your used mask into your pocket
  • Do not share your mask with others

It is important to remember a face covering or non-medical face mask is not a substitute for physical distancing. Non-medical face masks and coverings are an added layer of protection, especially in indoor settings where physical distancing might be difficult.
